Monteverde Weather

Sometimes sunny, sometimes misty, Always magical

Monteverde weather is as wonderfully unpredictable as the emotions of a teenager. One moment it can be sunny and the next it can be thundering. Rain and wind storms sometimes come on as if someone simply hit a light switch. These impressive storms can last up to 5 days.

Visitors to Monteverde are often thrown off by these weather changes. Don’t count on sunshine every day of your visit: Costa Rica does not have the landmass to heat up and store the heat. We are sandwiched between two huge masses of water, it’s less than 200km from coast to coast, and we have a high continental divide that all the winds have to pass over. We are situated on a small strip of land between North and South America. The weather patterns this creates are amazing to behold, but don’t count on constant sunlight!

That said, we do have many sunny days and even a real dry season between February and May. Make sure you come to Monteverde prepared for changes in the weather. While temperatures are usually moderate, you will appreciate having a long sleeve shirt available and a rain jacket. Ponchos are available for sale locally if you get caught without, but umbrellas don’t fare well in our wind!

Take a look at the weather forecast, pack for change, and make sure to check in with guides when you head out on tours about what to expect and what to bring with you.
